In celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and in support of the Year of Human Rights as called for by the U.N., the Human Rights Action Center is hosting the event, "Spreading the Seeds of Human Rights" on September 26 (Johnny Appleseed Day).
| Raise awareness about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. | |
| Distribute free copies of the UDHR to college students across the country. | |
| Gather signatures for a petition calling on Congress to print the UDHR inside of U.S. passports. |
History has taught us that human rights abuses are most easily perpetrated against people who have been deprived of a basic understanding of their own rights. That is why knowledge and understanding are so empowering as seeds for human freedom. It has been sixty years since the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the most important document of the century, and still the majority of our population is completely unaware of its existence and of the inalienable rights that it calls for. It is time that each of us stands up and realizes that we have the power to make a difference in our communities, our states, our nation, and our world by planting the UDHR deep in the young soil of our generation.
If you're interested in hosting an event near you (in a public place, on campus, etc.) in support of "Spreading the Seeds of Human Rights", we will be happy to send you petitions and free copies of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to distribute. Simply email us and tell us your ideas. We can then mail you the appropriate supplies in advance.
